Let's Rhumba! June 9/06 Medusa's Kitchen

NEW BACK FENCE
—David Humphreys, Stockton

Honeysuckle, red and white geraniums, pink pygmy
roses, a lavender herb explosion beside a lurid bougainvillea
sherbet Betty Boop lipstick full bloom off the front step,
still morning air, yesterday's warm delta wind tossed trees
new grown lime green June leaves a shimmering rustle
of a satin ballroom dress swishing around the floor.

Started first week in May, chain sawed the old
rotted west and south sides. Turned June 5 days ago
and it's pretty close to finished. A post hole digger
tells all you need to know about it with the whine of
a worm drive, mixing concrete with a hoe, drill and screw
gun boards cinched solid. Enough of that. Sweat is good
burning fat in the hot sun smelling sweet suntan lotion.

Good fences make fair impediments but let us not
to the marriage of mild conjecture admit anything other
than that the one on the south side is a little tight and won't
help pay for anything even though he's getting a brand new
beautiful red fence. You watch though, he'll be chummy
as hell when you put out the flags for 4th of July.

Kisses Flown to Darkness (& Po-Events 8/7-13)

HEART TROUBLE
—David Humphreys, Stockton

This is what will take it all away flown
in to death's hot oasis after day's serious
heat like black bullet birds and bats swarming
to the insect feeding frenzy. It will catch in
the throat and stab a knife in the breast bone
of a simple instant, slam a sledge hammer into
the end of all things. It is coming as inevitable
as the rolling globe will raise the light of day.
Oh God, forgive me. It will be just you and me
and all the loveliness of friends will pass away,
kisses flown to darkness.

Snakes on a Plane, Train, Automobile (& Po-Events 8/14-20)

THRESHOLD
—David Humphreys

August arrived like a blast furnace
pouring steel ingots into each long
day, scorching fire hydrant streets
blistering the cattle prod death toll,
chicken farms up and down the valley
a flutter of hovering feathers in suspended
dust motes.

The epistle this morning from Ephesians
seemed so benevolent: "Let no evil talk
come out of your mouths, but only what
is useful for building up, as there is need,
so that your words may give grace to those
who hear."

It was in the air this morning, a bracing
chill like the weather off the Gate blowing
whitecaps across the Potato Patch with
the smell of burning fields and a wedding
anniversary coming at the end of the month
like a change of perspective, dynamic movement
of one thing into something else, day into night,
night into the light of day.

paper one morning and there it is.
